Two years later, the ‘Transfiguración del Señor’
After two years of restoration work, the ‘Transfiguration of the Lord’ is finally back on display at the Museo del Prado, Madrid. The painting, attributed to Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni, is a copy of the last work Raphael painted before his death. Its large dimensions, 4.02 x 2.67 meters, make it the largest panel painting in the Prado Museum’s collection.
The work had to undergo a complete restoration due to structural and aesthetic damage to the support, the paint layer, and the frame. The restoration took two years due to its complexity, given that almost 200 years had passed since the last intervention.
Our SIT Spain art team had the real honor of supporting the brigade in moving and positioning the work, a rather complicated process that lasted more than eight hours due to the fact that the panel is very delicate due to its large dimensions and fragile structure.
The estimated weight is 200 kilos, the frame alone, and approximately 300 kilos for the work itself, making a total of 500 kilos for the entire work.
Now available to visit in room 49 of the #MuseodelPrado, you can’t miss its return!
